What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
