Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed series coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why not reference the classics?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
