UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
