The people of Israel commemorate second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks proceed
Citizens have assembled around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to close the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Negotiations
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance distribution
- After-conflict governance of the area
Civilian Reaction
In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location appears as home any longer and until each abducted person are released not a single person will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Near the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Activist a participant explained: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about the majority of the population want the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From the site, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, area and locality areas and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"Once the dusk arrives, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis said another two fatalities had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the southern area, health workers reported.
