Meteorologists have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Go Ahead Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are set to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are due to be low, making additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public should to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Advisories Released

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The guidance for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
