Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
