Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities released video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
