Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, the game developers launched a fresh playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option resembles the regular Breakthrough setup but includes several notable changes:
- Each team includes just 8 human participants, with the rest made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities done by human gamers award full XP, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
- Just a pair of maps are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
- Features like Dogtags, achievements, and career stat updates have been turned off.
So essentially, the playlist lives up to its title: it offers a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it gives more options for gamers seeking alternative ways to enjoy the game. However, gaming history have taught us anything, it's that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are mad.
Community Responses: From Fury to Praise
"People want real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," reads one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing idea," comments another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this title," while another details everything they believe to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."
However, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to warm up, human participants prevent it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this game 24/7. Let them find a middle ground," adds another. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is great for me," while another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Concerns and Player Input
Despite the support, there are valid points to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have pointed out that it will make wait times more extended for other modes due to the sheer number of options in the game already. On a similar note, certain regions often face mostly bots in the existing playlists. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Lastly, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide full XP, even against bots, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the mode. So this new playlist seems like the community meeting them halfway, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced so much fun in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and acting on player input. Tasks that were overly hard were adjusted rapidly, as did the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
