A Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Ground
During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was to book accommodation when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and all the youth hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the airport – but quickly found Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering near a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the night in a place operating through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for nailing a crucial interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.
The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed lost as a woman spotted me wandering around the city center and wondered if everything was alright. I explained my situation and without hesitation she offered I could crash on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering some food: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had taken home her part-time job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location and secure to spend the night.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she accepted as a young woman letting a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. In those days I existed within my male privilege bubble and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she did that – and remain deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish life has rewarded her good deed tenfold. The world needs more individuals like that woman.
